Editing in White Chapel

Consider the effect of editing on the impression the audience is given of policy

Cut
·         We see lots of reactions
·         Straight cuts
·         Lots of focus on female community officer
·         Lots of focus on new DI
·         Lots of focus on fox-man
·         Lots of different cuts when female officer is with the soon to be dead woman

SET UP -  PCSO, FOX MAN AND POSH MAN AS KEY – WE POSSIBLY IDENTIFY MORE THE FOX MAN AS HE IS THE HARD WORKING GUY – HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT – HE LOOKS MORE IN CHARGE AND CONTROLLED
Continuity
·         when the woman was found
·         when there was the riot
·         when they are examining the body
HURRIED, CHAOTIC, SHOWING THE MANY DIFFERENT SIDES TO A POLICE OFFICER DAY – SHOWS DETERMINATION

Cross cutting
·         the violence on the street and the men in the gentlemen’s lounge
CONTRASTS BETWEEN THE RANKS – DOES NOT PRESENT THE UPPER ECHELONS AS HARDWORKING – VERY MALE DOMINATED
Eye line match
·         When police are assessing dead body

Jump cut
·         Between the foot soldiers and the posh rozzers

Sequence shot
·         Where we were following posh man into the ball
·         Where he was given the promotion

Shot reverse
·         For many different conversations with normal police and at the ball.
Dolly shot
·         In the meeting with the posh rozzers – through the window

Pan

EDITING MAKE POSH BOY FEEL LESS IN CONTROL – MAKES HIM LOOK AS IF HE IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO DO HIS JOB – MAKES HIM LOOK STUPID.
EDITING TO SHOWS OBVIOUS DICOMFORT – WE IDENTIFY WITH THE OTHER OFFICERS
THE FOX MAN IS HUMAN

EDITING EMPHAISES STEREOTYPING
EDITING ALLOWS THE AUDIENCE TO IDENTIFY WITH A KEY OFFICER

Hustle Analysis

REPRESENTATION OF GENDER

CAMERA ANGLES

- close up when looking straight into the camera… both men and women show authority - equality of the genders
-over the shoulder '(£700)'
-two shot
- looks down on man looking for ring… less dominance?
- looks up at man who finds ring…. more authority?

SOUND

- drum roll when deciding on £3000 price tag…
- slow  jazz music in gentlemans club
- frantic fast music when looking for ring

-frantic chaotic music when women shopping- could link to women's mind whilst shopping
-pauses in music demonstrate the drama and control of the scenic
-type of music for male characters in generally more sombre and serious

MIS EN SCENE

-Old woman looks scruffy and a little out of place
-The woman in the background is looking at old woman in a weird way because she can afford the dress
-Blonde woman well presented with blazer  - nails painted red to show power, dominance danger, sex
-Smoking and drinking whisky in the mens bar - private bar because smoking is not allowed in public places
-Matching colour bag and purse of rich woman
-Men in suits - shows authority and importance and power
-Man fixing computer doesn't look like an average computer geek - looks dodgy - men are known to bend the rules
-The sales assistant follows man around who finds the ring  - shows empowerment and dominance of the guy who finds ring
-Woman is more in charge at the end, almost ordering and asking questions
- Woman sounds like she is getting pleasured when she looks at herself in the dress

Re-writing paragraph of essay

Mise-en-scene has been used well to represent gender. For example, the evil man is wearing a suit, which shows authority, power and an idea of dominance. However, the woman is wearing a black jacket and combat trousers. This shows that she is a worker, and has been working hard to spread the word about the doctor. This can be seen as being a little bit stereo-typical of women working hard, and men wanting to take over and dominate everything they are involved in. Also the security guards in the drama are all male, another example a stereo-typical man wanting to have order and being aggresive.
